And then you see the price — thirty-four dollars for a shampoo — and something in you quietly does the sum against the nine-dollar bottle in the supermarket aisle and closes the tab.
We understand that reaction completely. It’s a fair response to an unfair comparison, because a bottle is the wrong unit to compare.
What follows is the honest arithmetic of what natural shampoo actually costs in Australia, run on our own products, with nothing rounded in our favour.

Bottles vary. They hold different volumes, at different concentrations, and you use different amounts of each one. The only unit that lets you compare anything meaningfully is a single wash.
Our 500ml bottle holds, unsurprisingly, 500ml. A pump delivers roughly 5ml, and most people with mid-length hair use about two. Call it 10ml a wash, and one bottle gives you fifty washes. At $34, that’s 68 cents a wash.
Now take exactly the same formula in our 5L bulk size. Same ingredients, same Australian factory, same batches — the only difference is the container it arrives in. $175 for ten times the volume works out at 500 washes, at 35 cents each.

How refilling actually works
It’s less involved than people expect. There’s no special equipment and no mess if you go slowly.
What you’ll need
- Your existing Pure Earth aluminium bottles.
- A funnel or purchase a pump with your 5L order.
- Somewhere cool and dark to keep the container: a laundry cupboard or the space under the sink is ideal.
The routine
- Fill to just below the neck, so the pump has somewhere to sit.
- Wipe the thread, seal the cap on the 5L firmly, and keep it out of direct sunlight and heat.
- Refill as you go rather than decanting everything at once — the product keeps best sealed in the container it came in.
- Refill the bottle at least 3 -4 times and if you notice it is getting old or needs replacement purchase a new 500ml bottle.
How long a 5L lasts
A household of four gets about ten months out of it. A salon or a short-stay property will move through it a great deal faster — which is exactly what the size was designed for.
Who a 5L is right for — and who should skip it
We’d rather you bought the right size than the biggest one. A 5L is a real commitment, and it makes sense if:
- There’s more than one person in your household using it.
- You already know the formula suits your hair and skin.
- You have somewhere sensible to store a 5L container.
- You run a salon, spa, studio, or short-stay property and go through product in volume.
